For our resort transport, we operate 3 speedboats during the season, all of which can make the crossing between our Mentawai resort and mainland Sumatra in 6 hours or less. All speedboats have 2 x 40hp Yamaha 2 stroke engines on the back of them. All of our drivers are originally from the WavePark and knowledgeable of local conditions, waves and outboard mechanics. Each boat is equipped with a ladder, a roll-down tent, 3 board racks and a cooler for carrying cold drinks, fruit and snacks on each trip. Our average speed is around 18-20 knots, depending on how much algae has managed to plant itself on the bottom paint job. All the speedboats were originally dug-out canoes, reinforced, and widened with help from Mentawaian boat builders. All boats can comfortably sit 10 people with 15 surfboards in the racks. The engines operate on a mixture of kerosene and gasoline, the gasoline being used at slower speeds. The engine automatically switches over to kerosene once the minimum threshold of engine speed has been breached. The fuel is carried in plastic jerry cans and refilled daily from our fuel depot on the island. |
